For those of you who don't know Soul Calibur IV just came out & I being a huge fan of the series got the special edition. For those who don't know what Soul Calibur is, go away from my page right now your no longer welcome. So anyway let's start this review. When I first turned on my Xbox it upgraded itself. The the opening logos showed and I noticed the Havoc engine logo and was like, is that the only graphics engine Microsoft has now it's been used since Gears of War. The the opening cut scene played showing some amazing graphics. When that was over I got 5 gamer points just for turning on the game. Custom characters now have advantages for using different pieces of clothing, depending on who you are this can be good or bad. The story mode is really short this time around, I beat it with all 20 something characters in the first day. Sadly the bonus characters although they're cool, they could have been better. By this I mean in SC III the Bonus Characters were from the story mode like Strife and Luna, or from previous games like Li Long, Hwang, & Aurthur. In SC IV they are characters drawn by manga artists so all the stereotypes are here like the super human strength robot girl, the swordswoman with too many weapons and not enough clothes, the demon girl that looks like a child, the Elf girl with blond hair and pail skin, and the bondage girl with spikes on her nipples. Not a bad line up I'll admit, but when they throw in characters like Siegfried's Father, Zasalamel's servant, and Xuanhua's biological sister in the story but don't make them playable it kinda pisses me off. Now for character creation. The creation itself is more advanced, each piece of clothing gives a different effect, you can change voice pitch, alignment, and body build. You can even take a standard character and make your own custom version of him/her. However the weapon system has suffered a great deal in this game. Rather than pick your weapon before each fight, you must go to character creation and change it for good, even for the standard characters. Also all the extra styles from the last game are no longer there, like wave sword, steel fan, Sickle, Dagger, and all the generic styles. Also the Special Edition came with extra content for character creation, but you need Xbox Live to get it. Since I don't have Xbox Live yet I'm waiting until I get back from Canada, then I'll set up the free trail, and when that runs out I'll buy a year of it. Finally the Star Wars characters made a strange addition, and their styles are not available for custom characters, neither are the bonus character's styles, or the final boss' style which sucks because I like the Apprentice's style a lot. All in all not a bad game, just short and with a now flawed weapon system. And I shutter to think of all the Sephiroths I will find online when I get live. And that's my review of Soul Calibur IV.
